Although the “gaming smartphone” is now a race between a few brands, it’s difficult to believe that anyone can do it better than Asus and its ROG line. Today, Asus unveiled the ROG phone six series with major spec upgrades.

The Asus ROG (Republic of Gamers) and Phone 6 series are two models. The base ROG Phone 6 and the upgraded ROG Phone 6 Pro are available.

These two devices are very similar at their core. Both are powered by the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chipset, which Qualcomm announced a few months ago. It offers some performance and efficiency improvements that should align with the lineup’s gaming-focused focus.

The upgraded cooling system by Asus is designed to cool the chip down to 10 degrees Celsius. Both use the FHD+ 6.78-inch AMOLED display. It can also be used at 165Hz — 165 frames per second — with a touch sampling rate of 720Hz and 1200 nits peak brightness.

The only difference between the two phones on the specs sheet is the memory. While the base model can be ordered with 12GB or 16GB RAM, the Asus ROG Phone 6 Pro has 18GB. Each model comes with either 256GB or512GB storage, which isn’t expandable.

Another difference is that the Asus ROG Phone 6 Pro features a second display at its back. This small AMOLED panel can be customized via software. These phones come with Android 12 and Asus’ ROG UI — let’s hope it receives better support than the collaboration between Qualcomm.

The spec sheet also includes a triple camera array at the back, with a 50MP primary sensor and 13MP ultrawide sensors and a 5MP macro. A 12MP selfie camera is also available. It has IPX4 water resistance, a headphone jack, and dual front-facing speakers.

The battery section features a 6,000 mAh battery that can be split into two cells to charge faster and safer. It also has a USB-C port which allows for 65W charging. ROG Kunai, Asus’ new active cooling fan, is being introduced, along with two pairs of wireless earbuds that are truly wireless, as part of the ROG phone six series.

Pricing is a bit complicated. The base model will cost EUR999 in Europe. The Asus ROG Phone 6 Pro will cost EUR1299. Although one or both of these models should be available in the US, Asus doesn’t usually confirm a release date.
