China has unveiled its first domestically developed deep-sea exploration vessel, Tansuo-3, signaling a significant leap in the nation’s oceanic research capabilities. Officially launched in Sanya City, Hainan, the state-of-the-art ship is poised to begin its groundbreaking research missions in 2025.
A Technological Marvel
Designed by the Sanya Institute in collaboration with leading organizations, Tansuo-3 is packed with advanced features to support deep-sea exploration. The vessel has been built with the following key specifications:
- Top speed: 16 knots
- Range: 15,000 nautical miles
- Crew capacity: Approximately 80 members
This impressive design positions Tansuo-3 as a cornerstone for expanding China’s deep-sea research and exploration capabilities.
Preparation and Sea Trials
Built in 2023, Tansuo-3 successfully completed an eight-day sea trial in October, showcasing its readiness for operational deployment. The trial tested the ship’s technical systems, performance, and resilience, confirming its ability to handle the challenges of deep-sea expeditions.
