Cygnus Mission Go for Saturday Launch as Space Station Crew Preps

International Space Station. Two astronauts are training to capture the robot while the remaining members of the Expedition 66 crew focus on maintaining science equipment and orbital lab equipment.

Weather at the Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia is forecast to be 75% favorable for the launch of Northrop Grumman’s Cygnus space freighter on Saturday at 12:40 p.m. EST. ” data-gt-translate-attributes=’[]’>NASA Flight Engineers Raja Chari and Kayla Barron will be on duty Monday morning observing Cygnus’s arrival from the seven-windowed cupola. Chari will be working at the workstation for robotics, where she will be directing the Canadarm2 robotic arm. They will catch Cygnus on Monday morning when it will be launching at 4:00 a.m. at an approximate distance of 10 meters from the base. Barron will be watching the cargo craft’s systems throughout its logical approach to and rendezvous.

After the successful capture of Cygnus, Ground controllers will assume control of Canadarm2 and remotely steer the vehicle towards its Unity Module. Cygnus will be installed on Unity, and astronauts will open hatches and start taking off more than 8,300 pounds of station equipment and new research experiments. NASA Television is available on the official website, and the app will stream the launch live with the start of Saturday’s launch at noon p.m. with the rendezvous and capture coverage starting the next day when it is 3 a.m.

The remaining space explorers and two cosmonauts took care of various station gear, worked on space research, and unpacked a new Russian supply ship.

NASA Space Engineer Mark Vande Shei worked on Kibo Laboratory Module’s Water Recovery System as NASA astronaut Thomas Marshburn replaced components inside the treadmill COLBERT. Astronaut Matthias Maurer of ESA (European Space Agency) examined wireless equipment that downloads biomedical information, later transferred to equipment for detecting radiation.

Commander Anton Shkaplerov explored plasma physics to inform future research methods and spacecraft designs. Roscosmos Flight Engineer was working on Russian equipment for communications as he continued to remove the contents of the newly-arrived Progress 80 cargo craft.
